The London-Paris 2010 - We Did It!

In 2010, Sheila McWilliams, Nora Smith, Malachy Smith, Brendan Mooney, Ian Haslam and John Kennedy embarked on their journey from London to Paris. L2P 2010 has been the most physically demanding and at times most gruelling event that each of us has ever undertaken. But the pain and exhaustion that we experienced during the cycle melted away in our triumphant descent into Paris. The enthusiastic welcome from the Parisians rejuvenated tired limbs and spirits, they write. Check out the full article PDF and photos, well worth a read!

I've set myself some challenges in my time as a cyclist: competing in time trials, riding up mountains, travelling long distances, even 4 hour turbo sessions! But, I don't think I have ever experienced anything like the 3 days cycling from Esher, West London to Paris, writes Helen Carter of PBscience.

Mike Hawkins' L2P Blog on Cycling Weekly's Website

It's official. France is a big place and in June it's hot. Today reached 34 degrees. Despite the heat and the fact that we had 124km to do before the lunch stop, it really was incredible. All of our group was by now well into the way the ride worked with people were given free rein to ride off the front up the hills with those behind working together to get back in touch when the pace softened again. Whilst the rest of the time we rolled along as a tidy bunch, writes Mike Hawkins.

Alarm goes at 5am, and have to admit that I am already awake, as the nerves have kicked in...We packed and loaded the bikes onto the back of the car to head down to Hampton Court for the start of the race. Mick (my brother in law) and I were fairly quiet in the car, Mick because he kept packing and unpacking his bags, something he did not stop doing until we arrived in Paris, writes Will Carling.

The final Spring Ride before the big event was a huge success, cyclists took over the start point in Walton-on-Thames and everyone seemed intent on getting in those last few miles of training. Group 3 is starting to look like a peloton with some discipline emerging from the ranks. We set sail without our "Zappy" our trusty sensible ride captain, leaving the bunch with the old bloke to wheel the pack.

Like all good sporting events you have to run a dress rehearsal to iron out any last minute issues and blow away any cobwebs from the last time you used the ribbons, banners, and blow up hands, or radios in this case. So the London-Paris Stage 1 recce from Imber Court, East Mosely to Dover, 168k and 1700m ride, would involve the L2P support team plus 20 carefully handpicked individuals.

Sir Steve Redgrave, five times Olympic Gold medallist, is coming out of retirement to tackle one of the most formidable challenges possible on a bike. He’s competing in this year’s Race Across America (RAAM) to raise funds for Sport Relief and The Steve Redgrave Fund. He'll be backed by L2P partner, Sportique, with Century Rider Cream, Warming Up Oil and Cooling Cream to sooth aching legs. These will become invaluable assets during RAAM as the rider’s bodies are pushed to the limit.

The Geoff Thomas Foundation Charity Overview

The Geoff Thomas Foundation (GTF) is one of the 2010 L2P official charities and Geoff himself will be taking on the 520km again this year. Geoff, who captained Crystal Palace and played nine times for England, was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukaemia in 2003, aged 37, less than a year after his last season as a professional footballer. His sister, Kay, was luckily a perfect bone marrow match which gave him the opportunity to have a stem cell transplant in early 2004.

As you are no doubt aware The L2P 2010 is made up of 3 stages totaling 520Km. At an average speed of 32Km/h (20mph) you can expect to be in the saddle for over 16 hours, and at an average speed of 27Km/h (17mph) this equates to nearly 20 hours of riding. The secret to successfully completing the ride will be down to a combination of pace judgment, energy supply, keeping hydrated and ensuring you maximize your recovery after each stage, oh yes – coupled with a reasonable amount of training prior to the Tour! Read Science in Sport's advice on keeping fuelled during The L2P 2010.

He writes: I went out on my bike this morning, despite having a bad cough, because I am bloody hard like that! Anyway was really quite enjoying the ride, weather was good, little traffic and I am getting used to being on my Specialized bike (it is a bit of a thorough bred for a heathen like me, and also to be honest, I am not the ideal shape for a cyclist, so there must be quite a strain on the poor chassis!!)

Sadly the health gods had other ideas, having spent a few days in bed and 2 weeks recovering from some nasty virus - I was starting to wonder if I'd been in close quarters with some swines - of the even-toed ungulate persuasion, if you don't mind!

Lance Armstrong, Geoff Thomas and London-Paris Cycle Tour by The Times

A cloud of suspicion pursues Lance Armstrong, but I have only admiration for the guy. He provided inspiration when I was in a very dark place. Three days after I had chronic myeloid leukaemia diagnosed I received his autobiography from a friend. When you have been told you have cancer, it is natural to assume the worst. The very worst. Armstrong's book lifted me when I needed it most. He was proof that you could not only beat the illness but go on to achieve big things. As a sportsman, I found it compelling. For myself and millions of others, Armstrong is not just one of the greatest cyclists, but a guy who has used his fame to do so much good.

Riding Through the Storm

Ex England footballer, Geoff Thomas was diagnosed with cancer in 2003. His remarkable recovery and feats since then have become legendary and he now runs the Geoff Thomas Foundation, our lead charity for 2009. He has ridden all stages of the Tour de France - twice, the L2P in 2008 followed by the New York Marathon with the likes of Stephen Roche and Brian Smith. He is a football commentator at Setanta TV and has boundless energy and vision and will be riding the London-Paris Cycle Tour in 2009. If you want to have a good read and be motivated at a time when mornings and evenings are dark, and you are probably seeing more of the inside of your garage on your turbo than the outside world then Geoff's book "Riding Through the Storm" is a great motivating read. Have a look at the washingmachinepost review by Brian Palmer.

Best kept secret!

the washingmachine post, founded by Brian Palmer and regularly updated with esoteric cycling snippets is perhaps the most read (amongst insiders anyway) "secret" web site of the cycling industry in the UK. What is bizarre is that Brian lives on the remote island of Islay, not exactly the cycling centre of the universe but yet manages to keep a weather eye on happenings within the world of cycling. His local peloton rarely consists of more than three riders and displays no tan lines and yet manufacturers from all over the world send him products for testing/review. Certainly a web site worth bookmarking!
