Cycling hat trick for City Lawyer

London,UK. 15 December 2008

London-Paris 08 rider Anthony Burnett-Scott has won the event’s prestigious purple jersey which is awarded for the biggest fund-raising effort, for the third year running.

Burnett-Scott, a partner at international law firm Ashurst, raised over £15,000 (fifteen thousand pounds) for the event’s three nominated charities.

He will have the honour of wearing his jersey as he leads cyclists into Paris at the end of next summer’s London-Paris CycleTour alongside other jersey winners in the event.

London-Paris is the UK’s premier Pro-Am cycling event and Burnett-Scott, who lives in Chiswick, West London, rode in a four-man team sponsored by Ashurst.

He said: “The London-Paris Cycle Tour is a fantastic Pro-Am event and it’s great to be able to make a difference to people’s lives at the same time by raising funds.  I may not ever sport the leader’s yellow jersey, but I am very proud to be wearing my purple one.

“I have had tremendous support from so many people who have sponsored me over the last three years and hope that they will be there to support me as I make my bid for a fourth title next summer.’

Sven Thiele, director of the London-Paris Cycle Tour said: “This is an amazing achievement by Anthony.  To have raised such high levels of sponsorship for three consecutive years deserves massive applause.  The fund-raising efforts made by our riders to support our charities epitomises the great spirit of community the event generates.”

Burnett-Scott’s interest in cycling began over 20 years ago, when his quest to find a cycling jersey similar to one worn by Paul Weller on Top of the Pops, led him to his local cycle shop.  He says his recent return to cycling excuses him from helping his children with their math’s homework

The 2008 London-Paris event has raised almost £50,000 for three nominated charities – South Africa’s Morning Star which works for children with HIV; Christel House and Schools for Children in Cambodia.   In 2009 the Geoff Thomas Foundation will also be a beneficiary.  The GTF was established by former England and Crystal Palace footballer, Geoff Thomas, to raise money to fund blood cancer drug trials.

Editor’s Notes:

The London-Paris Cycle Tour is a unique three-day “Tour de France” style endurance event for amateur and cyclosportive riders. It is the "professional event for amateurs". Like a pro event it has full support, rolling road closures and covers 550 km in three days followed by a rest day in Paris. This PRO/AM has attracted riders like double Olympic Gold James Cracknell; Tour de France Giro and World Cup winner Stephen Roche (who will ride again in 09); Sean Kelly, Johan Museeuw, Brian Smith and ex-England footballer Geoff Thomas.
